Daughter complained of noise and poor handling of her 2005 Ford Escape when she came home after driving on the freeway. Discovered that the right hand rear shock tower had rusted through completely.

The rear shock is no longer attached to the body structure. There is no rust concern on the left hand side. Will be forced to investigate if possible to repair at a body shop and look for a new vehicle.

Fortunately the problem was noise only and discovered before something worse could have occurred. Does anyone know if there any suggested recourse to take directly with Ford with a vehicle of this age?

Yes, buy some new parts or hire someone to fix it.

I mean, this is a 12 year old car in Michigan, not unexpected.
