When we noticed the paint on our Mustang's spoiler was starting to chip and peel and that the paint on the hood is 2-3 shades lighter than the rest of the car, I contacted Ford Motor Company and was told to take the car to a dealership for evaluation. Since the chipping and peeling is confined to the spoiler and the paint-shade difference is confined to the hood, it seemed obvious, at least to us, that the paint job was inferior and it had nothing to do with normal wear-and-tear or sun damage.

However, when it was examined at the dealership, we were told there was nothing they could do, as it appeared to them that it was normal wear-and-tear, given the age of the car. Apparently, they think it is normal to have paint chipping and peeling off just one area of the car. At the rate the paint is peeling, there will be NO paint on that spoiler at all within 6 months. And the glaringly obvious 2-3 shade difference on the hood? Well, according to them, that's just the sun.

After some discussion, the body shop manager said they could repaint the entire car, at a cost to us of approximately $3,200. With a shrug and a smile and a not-our-problem attitude, they dismissed our complaint that the problem is with the paint job done at their factory. The manager did take our names and phone number. I don't know why, because that was three weeks ago, and he hasn't called. Not that I really expected him to. I'm not holding my breath.

Before this incident, we had actually been considering buying a Ford truck. Well, not anymore. Way to retain a customer, Ford!

Vehicle owners with issues pertaining to blistering/peeling paint on Ford vehicles have taken the automaker to small claims court. This has resulted in vehicle owners winning repaints (some $5K and above).

Owners have taken action and have received repaints or payments in NJ, MI, OR, NY, ID, IL, IN, MA, MD, CA and TX. Most of the vehicles were out of warranty, many were pre-owned.

However they still prevailed. Details presented on the Ford Mercury Paint Peeling Facebook Site.

Get all information about the dealer service manager, any estimates you have and contact the actual Ford Motor company customer service. I had did this with an engine problem I had.

The engine kept making a clicking sound. The dealer refused to fix the engine. After contacting the Ford Motor company, they contacted the dealer and sent out a rep to meet me at the dealership.

The rep authorized a new engine replacement. As far as chain of command goes, the dealership answers to the main Ford customer service.

Was just denied having oxidation on my hood, front quarter panels and bumper fixed while under the 36,000 mile warranty. The dealership said it was the worst paint job they had ever seen.

Still it was denied. I will never buy another Ford vehicle and I encourage everyone else not too either as they don't stand behind their product. I thought Ford was the last true American car.

I have no loyalty to them anymore.

My 07 Ford Edge has had paint cracks and discoloration over the hood and fender surfaces. The dealer said it was out of warranty, but it is truly a defective paint application. Are there any other remedies, other than to avoid Ford products?

I have a 2009 mustang and take exceptionally good care of the car. My bumper is streaked and faded and Ford says I put a chemical on it, which I did not. The rest of the car is like new.

The paint is peeling off in huge chunks from the roof of my 2005 F-150. It is now out of warranty so Ford said...sorry it is my issue.

The truck is a $38,000 four door Lariat 4x4. They screwed up but can't afford to make it right with so many cars/trucks having the same issue. No integrity.

No customer service. No longer a Ford customer.

Not enough info...was the car bought new? Ever had any paint work?

How old? Unusual to have one area a different shade, unless, previously painted. It is easy to blame the dealer, so what is the whole story?

How much to paint the hood and spoiler? Why paint the entire car is it does not need it.

Ford is aware that they have produced and released vehicles that have not met their paint engineering specifications.

We have contacted Ford's Senior Management directly on this issue.

The new business models of outsourcing process and quality responsibilities to the paint suppliers have failed Ford, Chrysler and other automakers.

Our research concludes millions of vehicles painted below specifications were released by Ford, Chrysler and other automakers.

This is an auto industry issue which is impacting each automaker.

Recent paint failures (paint peeling) have been reported on Ford's newer vehicles such as the Ford Transit, Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus.

Hopefully, they will show leadership in the auto industry and correct this issue for themselves and all automakers.
